MISOPROSTOL
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin analogue which has antisecretory and protective properties.
INDICATIONS: Gastirc ulcer, duodenal ulcer. Prevention of NSAID-associated gastric ulcer (especially in elderly in whom NSAIDs cannot be withdrawn).
DOSAGE: Adults: Benign gastric, duodenal and NSAID-associated ulcers: 800mcg daily in 2-4 divided doses with breakfast (or main meal) & at bedtime. Treatment should be continued for minimum 4 weeks and upto 8 weeks.
Prophylaxis: 200mcg 2-4 times daily.
CONTRAIDICATIONS: Women of child bearing age should be advised misoprostol only if they take effective contraceptive measure.
SIDE-EFFECTS: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, abnormal vaginal bleeding (inter menstrual bleedin, menorrhagia, postmenopausal bleeding). Rashes, dizziness.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Conditions where hypotension may precipitate severe complications e.g., ceebrovascular disease, cardiovascular disease.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Analgesics : increased risk of CNS toxicity with phenylbutazone.
