Memantine HCL
It is a NMDA receptor antagonist which binds prefentially to the NMDA receptor operated cation channels
INDICATIONS : Treatment of moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity.
SAFETY PROFILE : Caution required in patient suffering from epilepsy. Monitoring is necessary for patients with recent myocardial infarction, Uncompensated congestive heart failure (NYHA III-IV) and Uncontrolled hypertension. Avoid driving or operating machinery.
ADVERSE EFFECTS : Nausea, vomiting, urinary incontinence, Diarrhoea, constipation, back pain, UTI/URTI, Coughing, Hallucination, headache, peripheral edema, anxiety, somnolence, dizziness, insomnia, confusion, fatigue.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : Effects of Levadopa, Anticholinergics and dopaminergic agents may be enhanced while barbiturates and neuroleptics effects may be reduced if use concomitantly.
DOSAGE : Adults : Starting dose 5mg once daily increased up to 20mg/day. Should be increased in 5mg increments to 10mg/day (5mg twice a day) Dose for renal impairment patients is 10mg/day. Not recommended in severe renal impairment patients.
