Atomoxetine
Atomoxetine Hcl is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. The precise mechanism by which atomoxetine produces its therapeutic effects in ADHD is unknown, but it is presumed to be related to selective inhibition of the presynaptic norepinephrine transporter as determind in ex vivo Uptake and neurotransmitter depletion studies.
INDICATIONS : Treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.
CONTRAINDICATIONS : Hypersensitivity, narrow angle glaucoma.
Atomoxetine should not be taken with an MAOI or within 2 week after discontinuing an MAOI. Treatment with an MAOI should not be initiated with 2 weeks after discontinuing atomoxetine.
SAFETY PROFILE : Caution required in patients with hypertension, tachycardia, cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. Blood pressure should be measured periodically while on therapy. Orthostatic hypotension has been reported in subjects taking atomoxetine. Should be used cautiously in any condition that may predispose patients to hypotension. Urinary retention or urinary hesitancy. Driving or operating hazardous machinery is not recommended. Growth should be monitored during treatment.
