Ginkgo Biloba
The dried extract of this Chinese plant contains a mixture of ginkgo flavone glycosides which have PAF antagonistic activity. Since PAF is implicated in cer¬ebral thrombosis and infarct thus ginkgo will prevent cerebral impairment in MID.
INDICATIONS : Cerebral impairment due to organic de generation of cortex, vascular infarcts characterised by memory loss, dizziness, impaired concentration, impaired alertness, mood changes , sleep disturbances. Brain trauma, certain syndromes of vertigo, tinnitus presumed to be due to involution of cochlea of labyrinth, macro or microcirculatory deficit in these organs.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Not advisable in children. Acute phase of cerebrovascular accidents, acute myocardial infarction, paediatric memory deficits, mental retardation.
SAFETY PROFILE : Nausea, GI upsets, heartburn, dizziness and palpitation.
ADVERSE EFFECTS : Mild and related to upper GIT transient in nature, heart bum.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : None Known
DOSAGE : 40mg. per 8 hours significant clinical improvement reportedly occurs in 4 weeks duration.
