Dihydroergotoxine
It is an alpha adrenergic blocker, selectively increase cerebral blood flow. It is postulated to restore to normal the altered brain metabolism. Clinical trials in dementia nave shown short term improvement in certain symptoms.
INDICATIONS: Primary progressive dementia, Arterio-sclerotic dementia, Multi-infarct dementia, Alzheimer's dementia.
CONTRAINDICATIONS : Acute or chronic psychosis, hypersensitivity.
SAFETY PROFILE : Acute intermittent porphyria, severe bradycardia, concomitant use of caffeine.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Headache, dizziness, nasal stuffiness, nausea epigastric distress, skin rash, cramps, GI disturbances and orthostatic hypoten¬sion.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : None reported.
DOSAGE: Adults : 3-6mg daily in divided doses.
