Lamivudine
Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It is used for the treatment of HIV(human immunodeficiency virus) and hepatitis b. Low dose of lamivudine is used to cure the infection of hepatitis b. Hepatitis b is an infection of liver. High dose of lamivudine is used in the treatment of HIV.
LUMIVUDINE : Lamivudine is a synthetic nucleloside analogue with activity against the human immu¬nodeficiency virus (HIV). It belongs to the class of scriptase inhibitors. Lamivudine is the (-) enantiomer of a dideoxy analogue of cytidine.
Indications: Treatment of HIV infection in combination with Zidovudine.
Dosage: Adults: 150 mg twice daily in combination with Zidovudine. For adults with low body weight (less than 50 Kg or 110 Ib): recommended oral dose is 2 mg/Kg twice daily. recommended oral dose is 2mg/kg twice daily.
Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years) : 4mg/kg twice daily in combination with zidovudine.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, Patients with impaired renal function.
Special precautions: Pregnancy: Use only, if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risk.
Lactation : Not recommended.
Side-effects: Headache, malaise, fatigue, nausea, anorexia, abdominal cramps, neuropathy, insomnia, sleep related disorders, dizziness, depressive disorders nasal sign and symptoms, cough and skin rashes.
Drug Interactions : Trimethoprim 160mg and sulfamethoxazole 800 mg once daily has been shown to increase lamivudine exposure.
