NELFINAVIR : It is an inhibitor of the human im¬munodeficiency virus (HIV) protease.Inhibition of the viral protease prevents cleavage of the gag-pol polyprotein resulting in the production of immature, non-infectious virus.
Indications: It is indicated for the treatment of HIV infection when antiretroviral therapy is warranted.
Dosage: Adults : The recommended dose is 750 mg (three 250 mg tablets) three times daily. Nelfinavir mesylate should be taken with a meal or light snack.
Pediatric : The recommended oral dose of nelfinavir mesylate for pediatric patients 2 to 13 years of age is 20-30 mg/kg per dose, three times daily with a meal or a light snack.
Contraindications: It is contraindicated in patients with clinically significant hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Special Precautions: Nelfinavir is principally me¬tabolized by the liver. Therefore, caution should be exercised when administering this drug to patients with hepatic impairment.
Lactation: It is not known whether nelfinavir is ex¬creted in human milk.
Side effects: Back pain, fever, headache, anor¬exia, dyspepsia, gastrointestinal bleeding, hepati¬tis, anemia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, anxi¬ety, depression, dizziness, sleep disorder, suicide ideation, dyspnea, pharyngitis, rhinitis, dermatitis, eye disorder, sexual dysfunction and urine abnor¬mality.
Drug lnteractions: The drugs which shouldnot be co-administered with Nelfinavir Mesylate are Amiodarone, quinidine, astemizole, terfenadine, er¬got derivatives, rifampin, midazole, triazolam, cisapride.
