COLCHICINE:
Indications: Relief of acute gout, short-term prophylaxis of gout.
Dosage: Relief of acute gout:
Adult: Initially 1mg reduced to 0.5mg every 2-3 hours until pain relief is achieved or GI toxicity occurs May only he repeated after 3 days from previous treatment Max
dose: 6mg per course of treatment
Short-term prophylaxis of gout:
Adult: 0.5-0.6mg given 1-3 times daily
Side effects: Nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain diarrhea, GI heaorrhage rashes renal and hepatic damage in excessive doses. Rarely peripheral neuritis myopathy alopcia and with chronic therapy blood disorders like agranulocytosis aplastic aneamia.
