ESTROGENS:They are palliative; produce gratifying relief in primary as well as Mata static carcinoma prostate. It i an androgen dependent tumor and estrogens acts by suppressing androgen production (through pituitary). In addition, they may be antagonizing androgen action in the tumor stilbestrol diphosphate is prefered as it is concentrated in the prostate. They are also palliative in certain cases of carcinoma breast in late post menopausal women. Tumors giving estrogen receptor generally respond, but therapy is reserved for in operable or metastasis cases.
Indications:Palliative treatment of selected cases of disseminated mammary of prostates carcinoma.
Dosage:Initial treatment with high dosage potential therapy. Maint: 1-2 tabs thrice daily. Inj: initial treatment: 500mg i.vi daily for 5-10 days. Then 250mg daily for 10-20 days.
Contra-indications:Precautions & side effects: Have been listed in chapter on hormones.
Drug Interaction: Enhance toxic effects of migraine, reduces effect of anticoagulants adn hypoglycemic agents. Rifampicin, barbiturates and phenytoin increase rate to metabolism. Enhance activity of phenyloin.
