Gemfibrozil
Gemfibrozil lowers lipid levels. It’s a generic name for an oral drug. It is included in a class of drugs called fibrates. It has brand names like Lopid, Jezil and Gen-Fibro.
This drug is a cholesterol-modifying and blood lipid medicine. It is grouped as a fibric acid derivative which is similar to fenofibrate.
Effects of Gemfibrozil:
- Reduces the level of triglyceride
- Modest reduction of the level of Low density lipoprotein
- Reduce the level of Very low density lipoprotein
- Moderate increase in the level of High density lipoprotein
Technical detail:
GEMFIBROZIL It is a hyplipidemic drug & has action resemling nicotinic acid; decreases very low density lipoprotne (VLDL) and Triglyceride levels primarily. Though the crease in totla chloesterol may be modest a more fabourable distribution is indicated. Its primary action appears to be reduction fo VLDL svretion by livery. Addtional decrease in adipose tissue lipolysis and uptake of fatty acids by liver has been demonstrated.
Indications: Hyperlipidaemia, lipoprotein abnomalities resistant to diet alone.
Dosage: 900-1500mg daily (usual dose: 1200mg) in 2 divided doses 1/2 hr before meals.
Contra Indications : Children severe impairment of renal& hepatic function. Alcoholism, gallbladder disease. Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions: Conduct blood count, liver and repeat tham periodically. Discontinue if abnormal liver function persisits. Regular Opthalamic checkup reuqired.
Pediatrics: Should not be used.
Pregnancy: Should not be used.
Lactation: Should not be used.
Elderly: Use with caution.
Side effects: Eplgastric distress and loss motions, skin rashes, eosinopillia bodyache Raised blood sugar blurred vision impotence.
