Aztreonam
Aztreonam is a member of a class of beta-lactam antibiotics known as 'monobactams'. It’s the only drug of that category which is clinically available. It is structurally related to the other beta-lactams like cephalosporin, penicillins, and carbapenems (e.g. imipenem, meropenem). etc.
It’s used in the treatment of patients with lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections , skin/skin structure infections septicemia, intra-abdominal infections, and gynecological infections which is caused by susceptible gram-negative bacilli.
This drug is active against H. influenzae and aztreonam-susceptible strains of P. aeruginosa. This drug as relatively less side-effect as it is less likely to trigger allergic reactions than most other beta-lactams. It is often given to the patients who have hypersensitivity reaction to cephalosporins and penicillins.
