TETRACYCLINE: Absorption is better if taken in empty stimach. Tetracyclines have chleating property and insoluble and unabsorbable complixes with caluim and other metais Milk , oron preparation and non systemic antacids reduce their absorption.
Indications: Mixed bacterial infections of respiratory, genito-urinay and gastro-intestinal systems.
Dosage: 12gm daily in 4 divided dose.
Children : 20-40 mg/kg body wt daily in divided dose .
Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity. Latter half of pregnancy, Lactation.
Special Precautions: Renal or hepatic mipairment milk, antacids, mineral supplements, oral contraceptives.
Pediatrics: Not recommended under 8 years. Reduced dose is necessry in older children.
Pregnancy: May discolor the teeth of the developing toetus.
Lactation: May discolor the teeth of the baby
Elderly: No special problem.
Side - effects: G.I. disturbace, Tooth discolouration enamel hypoplasia, reduces fibula growth rate. Avoid use in children below 8 yrs unless no alternative drug.
Drug Interaction: Reduces activity of some penicillines. Affects stability of anticoagulant control. Blood levels reduced by anticonvulsants. Increases blood levels of carbamazepine and phenytion. Increase toxic effect of lithium. Increase digoxin levels. Absorption reduced by dairy produtos, iron, antacids.
