ETHAMBUTOL : It is well absorbed through Gastro istinal Tract and has a long half life. Since it inhibits the growth of M. tuberculosis, use in conjugation with other anti tubercular is considered valuable.
Indication : Tuberculosis
Dosage : 15 mg/kg body wt daily as single dose Retreatment : 25 mg/kg body wt. as single dose for 60 days, then 15 mg/kg body wt. to be administered with other anti-tubercular medicines.
Contra-Indications : Hypersensitivity. Optic neuritis, Liver damage. Susceptibility to epilepsy.
Side effects : Dose related adverse effect of retro-bulbar neuritis of which the first signs are blurred vision and an inability to distinguish colours.
Special Precautions : Test visual functions before starting followed by periodic assessment of visual fields treatment. Impaired renal function.
Paediatrics: Not prescribed under age of 6 years.
Pregnancy: Safety not established.
Lactation: Use with caution.
Elderly: Reduced dose may be necessary.
Drug Interactions : Absorption reduced by alumin-ium hydroxide.
