Recommanded drugs
ERYTHROMYCIN: Bacteristatic, highly active against Str. Pyogenes and Str. Pneumoniae, N. Gonorrhoeae. C diphtheriae, Listerua Camplyobacter, Legiionella and Mycoplasma Moderately sensitive are H. Influenzae. H dureyi B. Pertusis, Chlamydia trachmatis, Str viridans N meningitidis and Rickettsiae.
Indications: Upper respiratory tract infections Acute pneumonia Vaginitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis. Impetigo. Wound and burn infections. Infected eczema. Acne vulagaris. Sycosis cularis.
Dosage: 250 mg 6hrly; the dose may bne doubled for severe infections, Gonorrhoea ; 500mg 6 hrly for 6-7 days. Syphillis : 1gm 6 hrly for 10-15 days (30days in late Syphillis) Prophylaxi against streptococci : 250 mg 12 hrly. Children : 7.5-25 mg/kg body we 12 hrly . The dose can be doubled if required in severe cases
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity
Special Precautions: Hepatitis with cholestatic jundice, resembling viral hepatitis or extra hepatic biliary bostruction and reversible abnormalities in LFTs may be associated with protonged or repeated therapy. Interacts with Theophyline, digoxin carbamazepine. oral inticoagulants
Pediatrics: Reduced dose necessary
Pregnancy: Safe
Elderly: No specia broblem
Side effects: Mild to severe epigastric pain, Dairrhoea and other allergic reactions
Drug Interactions: May potentiate action of carbamzepine, cyclosporin theophyiline warfarin . Increase serum digoxin levels, reduces thera peutic aeffect of penicillins, ferfenadine and astemizoli increases the risk of the adverse effect on the heart.
