GENTAMICIN: Potent intibiotic having a broader spectrum of action against Ps. aeruginosa and most strains of proteus, E. coli. Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia.
Indications: Valuable in critically ill patients, with impaired host defense. Pseudomonas or Proteus infections, burns, urinary tract infections. tung abscesses, Osteomyelitis, middle ear infection septicaemia, Meningitis caused by gram negatice bacilli.
Dosage: 3-5 mg/kg body wt i.m. or i.v. daily in 3 divided dose for 7 to 10 days.
Contra-indications: Uremia, severe renal function impairment : pregnancy : neonates (except in life theratening situaltions).
Special Precautions: Dose of genamicin must be precisely calculated accroding to body we and level of renal function
Pediatrics: Reduced dose necessary.
Elderly: Reduced dose may be necessary due to adverse effects
Side effects: Irreversible tootoxicity, nephrotoxicity, headache, rashes, thrombocytopenia and joint pain.
Drug interaction: Increased incidence of totooxicity when combined with eathcrynic acid, risk of loss of hearing/kidney failure Cephalosporins hydrocortisone & indomethacin potenatiat hephor texicity, potentiates neromuscular blocking agints.
