AMPICILLIN WITH SULBACTAM SODIUM: Sulbactam sodium is irreversible betalactamase inhibitor thus it increases the activity of ampicillin against beta lactamase producing organisms. Spectrum of activity of this combination of ampicillin with sulbactam sodium includes beta lactamase and non-beta lactamase producing strains of gram-positive Bacteria staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus epidermidis staphylococcus saprophyticus and other strains Streptococcus faecalis, streptococcus pneumoniae, streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus viridans.
Gram-negative bacteria: Beta-lactamase and non beta-lactamase producing strains of Hemophi/us influenzae, Branhamella Catarrhalis, Escherichia Coil, Neisseria gonorrhoea, Proteus mirabl/is and other strains of Klebsiella species, Proteus Vul-garis, Providencia rettgeri, Providencia stuartii, Marganella morganii.
Anaerobes: Clostridium species, Peptococcus species, Peptostreptococcus species, Bacteroides species including B fragilis.
Indications: Pre, intra and post operative use for the prevention and treatment of surgical infections, Surgical prophylaxis, Intra-abdominal infections, Post-surgical infections, suture infections, Obstet rics and gynaecological infections, Bone and joint infections, Respiratory tract infections, Gonor rhoea, Skin & soft tissue infections, Infections in
Immunocompromised patients Dosage: I.V. slpw injection over or atleast 10-15 mins, or in greater dilutions with 50-100 ml of a compatible diluent as an intravenous infusion over 15-30 mins. It can also be administered by deep
intra muscular injection. 1.5 gm [0.5 gm Sulbactam (as sod), 1 gm Ampicillin (as sod) to 3 gm (1 gm Sulbactam (as sod), 2 gm Ampicillin (as sod)] every
6 hrs. Max 4 gm per day.
Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity .
Special Precautions: Pregnancy, Nursing mother, not in infants and children under age of 12, concurrent use with allopurinol.
Side-effects: Diarrhoea, rash, Gastritis, stomatitis, black hairy tongue, enterocolitis, pseudomembranous colitis, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, erythema multiforme, agranulocytosis.
