CARBENICILIN: It is active against pseudomonas aeurginosa and indole positive proteus wich are not inhibited by antibitocis other than gentamicin and polymyxin B. It is neither penicillinnase resistant nor acid resistant.
Indications : Senticaemia. Urinary and respiratory tact infections, infected burns. Generalized systemic infections. Endocarditis, meningitis, Post operative infections.
Dosage : Adults : 1-2 gm i.m. or 1-5 gm i.v. every 46 hours
Children : 50-400 mg/kg bodywe daily in divided doses.
Contra-Indications : Penicillin allergy.
Special Precautions: Possible super infection. Bleeding disorders, Monitor electrolyte, eaematopoietc and cardiac status, Adjust soe in renal impairment.
Pediatrics: Safety not clearly established.
Pregnancy: Safety not clearly established.
Lactation: Use with caution.
Elderly: safe.
Side-effect: G.I. disturbances.
Drug Interactions: Hypocalcaemia if digitalis is administered concomitantly. Effective combination in high dose with amino glycosides. Probenecid problogs half-life of carbenicillin.
