NALIDIXIC ACID : It has high bectenistiac and bactercidal activity aganinst infections caused by Garm-negative organisms.

Indications: Acute and chronic ruinary infections produced by susceptible Gram-negative species cystitis, Pyelonephritis. Progatitis, postpartum pyelitis, urethritis and trigonitis. Intestinal infections, diarrhoea, and dysenter-especially when produced by saimonally, shigella, E . coli and proteus. In chronic and rosistant infections, intial therapy shlild be followed after several weeks by a second course of treatment Urinary stasis, which can aggravate and prolong ruinary infections should be corrected (surgically, if necessary)

Dosage: 1 gm 6 hrly Children: 55mg/kg wr daily divided doses. All for at least 7 days.
Not recommended for infants below 3 months.

Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity t nalidixic acid. Convulsive disorders, first timester of pregnancy.

Special Precautions: Blood counts, renal and liver function tests should be performed periodically if treatment is contiued for more than two weeks caution with patients of hepatic and renal impairmrnt. epliepsy or cerebral arteriosclerosis. Avoid undue exposure to direct sunlight.

Pediatrics: Reduced dose necessary. Not recommended below 3 months.
Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
Lactation: Contraindicated.
Elderly: No special problem.

Side effects : Drowsiness, weakness, headache, dizziness, and vertigo. Decrease in visula activity and double vision, skin rashes, blood dyscrasia convulsions, photosensitivity itracranial hypertension.

Drug Interactions: Enhances effect of oral anticoagulains, antagonise nitrofunantion serious G.I.T. toxcity with mephalan. Food detays absorption. Probenecid prolong half-life. Chlorpromazine and perphenazine potentiates antibacterial effect.
