CAPREOMYCIN: It is a second line antimycobacterial drug, and is a becetericidal agent which exhibits activity against human starins of Maycobarcterium tuberculosis.
Indications : Second line drug for concomitant use with other appropriate anti-tubercular drugs when the first line drugs are ineffective.
Dosage : 1gm daily intramuscularly, followed by 1g i.m. 2.3 times weekly.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity.
Special precautions: Audiometric, renal function, tests and liver function tests must be performed at regular intervals.
Pediatrics: Not recommended.
Pregnancy: Safety not established.
Lactation: Use with caution.
Side effects: Tinnitus, vertigo, leucopenia, hypokalemia, urticaria, skin rash, fever, pain and induration at injection site, sbnormalities in liver functions.
Drug interaction: Co-administraion of aminoglycoside and other polypeptide antibiotics may increase risk of repiratory paralysis and renal dysfunction. Non depolarishing neuromuscular blocking agent enhaces neuromuscular blockade due to synergistic effect on myoneural function.
