PIPERACILLIN: It is recently developed penicillin which has activity similar to carbenicillin or ticarillin against Pseudomonas and inhibit Klebsiella as well. They have been used for infections caused by these organisms as well as for mixed aerobic-anaerbic infections.
Indications: Systemic & local infections, preoperative prophylaxis, gynaecological infections,U.T.I. neonatal & life-threatening pediatric infections. Burns, septicemia.
Dosage: To be given i.v. or i.m. 6-8 gm/day. Serious & complicated infections 12-18 gm/day.
Contra Indications: Hypersensitivity to penicillin or Cephalosporin.
Special Precautions: in pregnancy only when essential. Neuromuscular excitability or convulsion may occur.
Pediatrics: Safety in children below 12 yrs not established and in neonates not known.
Pregnancy: Not risk.
Lactation: Use with caution.
Elderly: Safe.
Side effects: High dose may cause bleeding by interfering with platelet function.
Drug Interactions: Inactivate aminoglycosed, synergistic with cephalosporin, piperacillin reduced by probenecid.
