GATIFLOXACIN It is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone that offers enhanced gram-positive activity and anaerobic coverage compared to other fluoroquinolones.

Indications: Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community acquired pneumonia, acute sinusitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infection, complicated urinary tract infections, acute pyelonephritis, uncomplicated urethral gonorrhea in men, endocervical and rectal gonorrhea in women.

Dosage: Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, complicated urinary tract infections, acute pyelonephritis : 400mg for 7-10days. Community-acquired pneumonia : 400mg for 7-14 days.

Acute sinusitis : 400mg for 10 days.

Uncomplicated urinary tract infection : 400mg as single dose or 200mg for 3 days.

Uncomplicated urethral gonorrhea in men, endocervical and rectal gonorrhea in women : 400mg as single dose.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, Children < 18 yr, Pregnancy.

Special Precautions: In patients receiving class IA or class III antiarrhythmic agents and uncorrected hypokalemia, patients with known or suspected CNS disorders, renal impairment, cirrhosis, geriatic, dialysis and lactation. Concurrent use of bepridil, cisapride, erythromycin, pentamidine, phenothiazines, or tricyclic, antidepressants may increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular reactions.

Side effects: Seizures, rapid heartbeat, mental confusion, hallucinations, agitation, nightmares, depression, shortness of breath, unusual swelling in the face or extremities and loss of consciousness. Also skin burning, redness, blisters, rash, or itching on exposure to sunlight; increased risk of tendinits or tendon rupture. Nausea, vaginitis, diarrhea, headache and dizziness, abnormal vision, change in sense of taste, ringing in the ears.

Drug Interaction: Diagoxin, Probenecid, warfarin, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)-may increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsions, Ferrous sulfate, antacids.
