Arteether
Arteether is the active constituent of the plant named Artemisia annua. This drug is both safe and fast acting. It’s a semi synthetic derivative of artemisinine. Arteether is mainly used in the treatment of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria and cerebral malaria. It’s a blood schizonticidal agent for P. falciparum malaria at the erythrocytic stage.
Artheer is not recommended for the treatment of malaria caused by P. ovalem P. vivax, and P. malariae as other good antimalarial drugs are already available. β arteether is transformed into dihydroartemisinin and has a half-life of one to two days. It is eliminated by hepatic metabolism. It is more stable and more lipophilic compared to other artemisinin compounds.
Technical detail
ARTEETHER: It is a synthetic dervative of artemisinin, a product of Chinese plant, Artemisia ammia. It is fast acting blood schizondicidal agent for P. flciparum malaria at the erythroytic stage.
Indication: Severe and complicated malaria including cerebral malaria. No cross resistance detected with chloroquine.
Dosage:
Adult: 150mg once daily for 3 consecutive days.
Children: 3mg/kg per day administered by intramuscular injection over a 3-day period.
Contra indications: Pregnancy nursing mother.
Side effects: Nausea, dizziness, headache, vomiting giddiness, loose motions or pain at injection site.
