Raloxifene is licensed for the treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis; unlike hormone replacement therapy, raloxifene does not reduce menopausal vasomotor symptoms.
Raloxifene may reduce the incidence of oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer but its role in established breast cancer is not yet clear. The manufacturer advises avoiding its use during treatment for breast cancer.
Indications : treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis
Cautions : risk factors for venous thromboembolism (discontinue if prolonged immbilisation); breast cancer (see notes above); history of oestrogen induced hypertriglyceridaemia (monitor serum triglycerides);
Interactions : Appendix 1 (Raloxifene)
Contra-Indications : history of venous thromboembolism, undiagnosed uterine bleeding, endometrial cancer, hepatic impairment, cholestasis, sever renal impairment; pregnancy and breast feeding.
Side-Effect : venous thromboembolism, thrombophlebitis, hot flushes, leg cramps, peripheral oedema, influenza-like symptoms; rarely rashes, gastro-intestinal disturbances, hypertension, headache (including migraine)
Dose: 60 mg once daily
Uses:
- Prevents osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
- Lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL).
- Does not treat hot flashes of menopause.
How to take?
Tablets - Swallow with water, with or without food. If you can't swallow whole, crumble tablet and take with liquid or food.
When to take?
At the same time each day.
If you forget dose?
Takes as soon as you remember up to 12 hours late. If more than 12 hours, wait for next scheduled dose (don't double this dose).
What drug does?
Has estrogen-like effects on bone and increases bone mineral density.
Time lapse before drug works?
Up to twelve months.
Don't take with?
Any other prescription or nonprescription drug without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
