ASTEMIZOLE: It is long acting, non sedative H1 antagonist which dose not crosses the blood-brain barrier and hence unlike other anti-histaminic, dose not causes side effects on central nervous system.
Indications : Allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, in chronic allergic dermatological disorders and other delayed allergic reactions.
Dosage : Adults : 10mg once daily before meals on an empty stomach Max : 30mg once daily, Continued for 7 days then Maint : 100 mg daily.
Children : 2-6 yrs : 1 millilitre/5kg body wt daily of syrup of 1mg/ml. 6-12yrs. once a day. Max : 15 mg/day for 7 days then maint. : 5mg daily.
Contra-Indications : Hypersensitivity pregnancy.
Special Precautions : To be given on empty stomach. Women of chold bearing age should take adequate contraceptive measured druing and several weeks after therapy.
Paediatrics : Not recommended under 12 years.
Pregnancy : May effect the developing foet.
Lactation : Use only, if clearly indicated.
Elderly : Dose adjustment may be required.
Side effects : Dry mouth weight gain, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, flautlence, rarely rash and eczema.
Drug interactions : May potentiate alcohol, MAOI’s CNS depressants.
