It is a biguanide derivative. It delays absorption of glucose from GI tract, increases insulin sensitivity and 2decreases hepatic gluconeogensis.

INDICATIONS: Type II diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) & secondary failure sulfonylureas.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, ketoacidosis, severe stress trauma, CHF, pregnancy and lactation.

SAFETY PROFILE: Chronic alcoholism, hepatic and/or renal impairment, starvation.

ADVERSE EFFECTS: G.I. disturbances, lactic acidosis and development of tolerance.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Anticoagulants increase to hypoglycaemic effect.

DOSAGE: 25 mg four times a day can be increased to a maximum dose of 300 mg daily depending upon the levels of blood glucose.
