They are partly absorbed and reexcreted in bile: entero-hepatic circulation is more important in phenolphthalein, which can produce protracted action.
INDICATIONS: All forms of constipation, e.g. in bedridden patients, due to change of food or enviromment, illness or digesgtive disorders. Relief of evacuation in painful conditions such as haemorrhoids. Pre-and postoperatively. Preparation for barium enema; preparation of colon for proctosigmoidos copy.
DOSAGE: Bisacodyl: 5-15 mg at bedtime, Phenolphthalein: 60-130 mg at bedtime.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS: Acute surgical abdomen.
SPECAIAL PRECAUTIONS: First 3 months of pregnancy. The concurrent administration of antacids (Sod. Bicarbonate) and milk should be avoided.
SIDE-EFFECTS: Abdominal discomfort. Soreness in the anal region due to leakage of the suppository base.
