Eyes are one of the most important organs of our body. One must be extra vigilant and guarded as far as the care and safety of the eyes is concerned. Modern research has negated the ideas that you can harm your eyes and vision by watching TV from a close distance, by reading in insufficient light etc. But still, if you believe that you can do nothing to save your vision or keep your eyes in a healthy condition, you are totally in the wrong.

The reality is that we resort to prescription drugs or generic drugs only when we experience some kind of problem with our eyes. Otherwise we take it for granted that nothing can harm our eyes. Methylphenidate or Ritalin is a common prescription drug that is used all over the world. It has several benefits but its abuse has become a cause of lot of concern all over the world. Prescription drugs for the eyes also have the added advantage that their cost is covered under various Medicare prescription drug plans.

On an average 3 diseases of the eyes, namely, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration affect most of the people all over the world.

Glaucoma: It is in fact a host of eye disease that affects the optic nerve of the eyes. The drainage canals of the eyes are blocked and the vision starts to diminish with time. Sometimes, there are no visible symptoms and you can't detect that you are suffering from Glaucoma. Therefore, a regular check up can save you from this disease. Drugs and surgery are the possible outcomes.

Presbyopia: It is a condition in which the lenses of the eyes become stiff with age. As a result, the lens is not able to change its shape and adjust itself to the change in light. So, one is not able to focus on things. The remedy is to consult your eye-specialist and have a pair of reading glasses for you as early as possible. Any other medication is not required in this case.

Age-related cataracts: These usually affect people when they reach the age of 60 years but some case are found in the case of people who are still in their forties. In this disease the lens of the eye tends to become clouded so that the vision is affected considerably. The only remedy is to remove the blurred lens and replace it with a new one, preferably a plastic one. Once implanted it remains in the eyes for the whole life.

You have to make it certain that you don't have any kind of hidden eye diseases. You should get a thorough check up of your eyes every couple of years in addition to using the prescription medicines like various drops and creams available for the eyes in the market. Your pupils should be dilated and your optic nerve should be checked thoroughly every 3 years.
