NORFLOXACIN : It is a broad spectrum fluoro quinolone antibacterial which achieves therapeutic levels in various ocular tissues and fluids as well as the tissues of the ear. Hence topical administration of this drug is useful in the treatment of various infections of the eye & ear.
Indications: Eye: Conjunctivitis, keratitis, kerato conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, acute meibomiantis & dacryocystitis. Prevention of ocular infections after removal of a corneal or conunctival foreign body, after damage from chemical or physical agents, before & after ocular surgery.
Ear: Otitis externa, acute otitis media, chronic suppurative otitis media, prophylaxis during otic srgeries e.g. mastoid surgery.
Dosage: Eye: Acute Infections: 1-2 drops every 15-30 mins; Moderate infections: 1-2 drops 2-6 times daily; Acute & chronic trachoma : 2 drops in each eye 2-4 times daily. Ear : 2-3 drops every 2-3 hrs.
Contra Indications: Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions: Do not touch dropper tip as it may contaminate the soln. Not for injection.
Pediatrics: Not recommended.
Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
Lactation: Safety not established.
Elderly: Safe.
