Recommanded drugs
DORYX (doxycycline hyclate) Delayed-Release Tablets, for oral
administration, contain specially coated pellets of doxycycline
hyclate, a broad-spectrum antibiotic synthetically derived from
oxytetracycline, in a delayed-release formulation for oral administration.
INDICATIONS
To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain
the effectiveness of DORYX and other antibacterial drugs, DORYX
should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven
or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When
culture and susceptibility information are available, they should
be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy.
In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility
patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: SLE, porphyria and hypersensitivity.
SAFETY PROFILE : Not to use in pregnancy and
children below the age of 8 years unused supplies of the antibiotic
should be discarded.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Gastrointestinal discomfort,
light sensitive rash, itching, diarrhea, fever, renal side effects.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Oral contraceptive effectiveness
is decreased, oral anticoagulants efficacy is increases : barbiturates,
carbamezepine and phenytoin: decrease doxycycline effectiveness:
antacids: impair its absorption.
DOSAGE: Oral adults: 100 mg every 12hours during
first 24 hours, following by 100 mg once daily or twice daily
in severe infections. Children above 8 years : 4-5 mg/kg body
weight/day divided into two equal dose given every 12 hours the
first day followed by half the dose as single daily dose. 200
mg iv in one or two infusions on first and 100-200 mg on subsequent
days in adults.
