It is a vasodilator and stimulation of hair growth is secondary
to increased cutaneous blood flow and stimulation of resting hair
follicles.
INDICATIONS: Male pattern baldness (alopecia
androgenetics).
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Pheaochromo-cytoma, hypersensitivity
to minoxidil or any component.
SAFETY PROFILE: Use with caution in patients
with pulmonary hypertension, renal failure, congestive heart failure,
coronary artery disease. Topical product must be used everyday.
Hair growth usually takes 4 months.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Incidence of adverse events
is not always reported. However, there may be dizziness, tachycardia,
oedema, transient chest pain, increased or decreased blood pressure
and pulse rate, headache, weakness, taste alterations, vertigo,
anxiety, local irritation, dryness, erythema, allergic contact
dermatitis, pruritus, scaling eczema, seborrrhoea,, popular rash,
folliculitis, flushing, exacerbation of hair loss, alopecia, hypertrichosis,
increased hair growth outside the area of application.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Guanethidine can cause severe
orthostasis, antihypertensive effect may be additive.
DOSAGE: Apply twice daily on scalp: 4 month
of therapy may be necessary for hair growth.
