Alprostadil

Alprostadil is a prostaglandin used as vasodilator, because it dilates the specific muscles and maintain continuous blood supply to that part of the body for the time duration till the effect of this medicine is there. Alprostadil treats the cardiac disorders in the new born childrens. Alprostadil is mainly used for treating erectile dysfunctions in men. This medicine is used in two forms : injectables and pellets. The injections are inserted in to the top muscle of penis and pellets are inserted in to the urethral opening . The injection shows its effect quickly than compare to pellets. By continuously applying injections to the penile muscles may cause muscular tenderness at that place which may be very painful and can take some time to heal. After applying alprostadil dose, sexual pleasure can be enjoyed for at least one hour.

INDICATIONS: Maintenance of potency of ductus arteriosus in neonates with congenital heart disease.

DOSAGE: Child: 0.05-0.1 mcg/kg/min by continuous IV infusion into a large vein, or alternatively through an umbilical artery catheter placed at the ductal opening. Reduce to the lowest dose necessary to maintain response as soon as possible.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity to ingredients, hyaline membrane disease. Pregnancy.
