Clopidogrel
Clopidogrel is oral antiplatelet drug used to stop blood clot formation in arteries. Clopidogrel is used to treat peripheral vascular disease. In peripheral vascular disease, there occurs a hinderence in supply of blood to the large arteries in arms & legs results in inflammation of that part where blood supply is obstructed. This medicine is also used to treat coronary artery disease. In this condition, there is obstruction in arteries in oxygen supply to the heart muscles. This obstruction is occurred due to the deposition of cholesterol layer in the inner lining of arteries. Clopidogrel is used to treat cerebrovascular disease. In this disease, there is a problem arises in blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. This problem may occur due to high blood pressure by which vessel lining may be damaged.
It is a thienopyridine that irreversibly inhibits platelet aggregation. Clopidogrel selectively inhibits the binding. Of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to its plaelet receptor and the subsequent ADP-medicated activation of the glycoprotein GPIIB/IIa complex, thereby inhibiting platelet aggregation.
INDICATIONS: Reduction of athero-scleroic events (MI, stroke, and vascular death) in patients with atherosclerosis documented by recent stroke, recent MI, or established peripheral arterial diseases.
DOSAGE: Adults: 75 mg once daily with or without food.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity, peptic ulcer or intracranial haemorrhage.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Patients at risk of increased bleeding from trauma, surgery, hepatic impairment.
SIDE-EFFECTS: Neutropenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, diarrhea, rash pruritus and abdominal comfort.
