Chlortalidone

Chlortalidone is also called chlorthalidone sometimes. It’s a diuretic drug which is used for treating hypertension. It is called as a thiazide diuretic because it effects similarly to the thiazides. The difference is that it does not contain benzothiadiazine .

Chlorthalidone has the longest duration of action, when it is compared with other medications that belongs to the thiazide class. Chlortalidone is mostly used in hypertension and edema management. Chlorthalidone’s efficiency is decreased in person who has some renal diseaes like Chronic Renal Disease. FDA approved Chlorthalidone in 1960.

Technical detail:

It is particularly long acting diuretic which is thiazide like, related heterocyclic.

INDICATIONS: Hypertension, oedema, toxaemia of pregnancy, premenstrual tension.

DOSAGE: Initially 50 mg on alternate days followed by 100 mg. all as single doses.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS: Severe renal failure. Cirrhosis of liver, nephritic syndrome.

SIDE-EFFECTS: G.I. disturbance, hearing loss, acute saline depletion, allergic manifestations, carbohydrate intolerance, impotence, postural hypotension, jaundice, cardiac arrhythmias, fatigue.

DRUG INTERACTION: Potentiate aminoglycoside nephrotoxicity. Enhances lithium toxicity. Prolonged paralysis due to tubocurarine.
