It is unique among adrenergic antagonisits in blocking both an and b receptors. Labetalol is orally effective and undergoes considerable first pass metabolism.
INDICATIONS: All grades of hypertension. Specially use in pheochromocytoma and clonidine with drawl hypertension.
DOSAGE: Start with 50 mg twice daily, increase at fortnightly intervals to 100-200mg twice daily. Usual dose:200-400 mg daily.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS: Children, allergic disorders with predisposition to broncospsm, right ventricular failure, secondary to pulmonary hypertension. A.V.block greator than 1st degree, sinus bradycardia shock, CHF pregnancy, lactation, aneasthesia with agents producing myocardial depression.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Abrupt withdrawal, diabetes, cardiac failure, anesthesia, hyperthyroidism, postural hypotension, eye and skin reaction, liver dysfunction.
SIDE-EFFECTS: Failure of ejaculation in males, headache, angina, jaundice, dreams, nightmares.
