GLIMEPIRIDE: It is a hypoglycaemic agent belonging to jkthe second generation sulfonylureas. It appears to lower blood glucose by stimulating insulin release from beta cells in the panceratic islets possibly due to increased intracellular cAMP.
Indication: Non-insulin dependent diabetes
Dosage: Initially 1 mg once daily is given. Based on regular blood sugar monitoring, titration in dose is carried out step wise at intervals of 1 to 1 to 2 weeks
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity. Pregnacy and lactation.
Special precautions: Not to opreate machinery or vehicle.
Side-effects: Hypoglycemia, temporary visualimpairment, gastroinetstinal disturbences.
Drug interactions: Insulin and other oral antidiabetics,AQE inhibitors, allopunnol anabolic steroids and male sex homones, chloramphenicol, coumarin derivaties, cyclophosphamide disophramide, tenfluramine, fluoxetine. guanethidine, ifosfamide, MAO inhibitors, miconazole, phenylbutazone, oxphenbutazone probenecid causes potentatin of hypoglycemic effect.
