GLUCAGON: It is a hyperglycaemic, most of its actions are opposite to that or insulin. It is considered to be the hormone of fuel mobilization. It secretion is increased durging fasting, this serves to maintain energy promoting glyconegenesis in liver. Increased sevretion of glcaugon has been shown to attend all forms of severe tissue injury (trauma, surgery, burns, infection, myocardial infaction). It is belived to be called in under these conditions to enhance glucose supply to the injured tissue. Glucagon increases the forece adn rate of carediac contractions and this is not antagonised by B blockers It has rlaxant action on the gut and inhibits gastric acid production.
Indications: Hypoglycemia, cardiogenic shock diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. For x0ray examination of gut, billiary colic diverticlitis.
Dosage: 0.5mg-1 by s.c i.m .i.v inj
Contra Indications: Glucagonoma, Insulinoma.
Special Precautions: Concurrent admin of warfarin
Pediatrics: Should not be used.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Should not be used.
Elderly: Safe.
