TOBRAMYCIN SULPHATE:It is an amino glycoside that acts by inhibiting the synthesis of protein in bacterial cells.

Indications: Septicemia, Lowe respiratory tract infections meningitis, Intra-abdominal infections urinary tract infection.

Dosage: Adults with serious infections: 3 mg/kg/day administered in 3 equal doses every 8 hours Adults with life-threatening infections unto 5mg/kg day. In 3 or 4 equal doses.
Children 6 to 7.5mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equally divided doses (2 to 2.5mg/kg every 8 hours or 1.5 to 1.89mg/kg every 6 hours.
Premature or full-term neonates one week of age of less-Unto 4mg/kg/day my be administered in 2 equal doses every 12 hours.

Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity

Special Precaution: Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity, premature and neonatal infants, should not be given concurrently with potent diuretics, such as ethacrynic acid and arsenide, serum calcium magnesium and sodium should be monitored.

Pediatrics: safety not clearly established.
Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
Lactation: Contraindicated.
Elderly: Use with caution.

Side-Effects: Neurotoxicity on both the vestibular & auditory braches of the eighth nerve, Nephrotoxicity, granulocytopenia & thrombocytopenia, fever rash, exfoliate dermatitis, itching, urinary nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache.

Drug Interactions: Ethacrynic acid and other neuromuscular blocking drugs increase the nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, Penicillin’s, cephalosporin’s and newer beta-lactic antibiotics increases the action oftobramycin.
