It is active against mycobacterium Avium complex, atypical mycobacteria, Mybacterium Leprai and some anaerobes.it is more active against sensitive of Gram positive cocci., Moraxella, Legionella, Mycoplasma pneumonia and Helicobacter pylori. INDICATIONS: Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, sinusitis otitis media atypical pneumonia, skin and skin structure infection due to staph. Aureus or strep. Pyogenes used as a component of triple drug regimen. It eradicates H. Pylori. It is a first line drug in the combination regimen for MAC infection in AIDS patient. It is a second line drug for other atypical mycobacterial diseases as well as leprosy.

SAFETY PROFLIE : Since clarithromycin is newer antibiotic and should be given as an alternative to other established drugs. The use of this should be reserved for some microorganism.

ADVERSE EFFECTS: Mild to sever epigastric pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, fever, pseudomembranous enterocolitis.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: By inhibiting cytochrome P450, it increases the serum concentration of theophylline, predunisolone. If administered with terfenadine / astemizole / cisapride cause ventricular arrhythmia.

DOSAGE: 250 mg BD orally. Children : 7.5 mg/kg twice daily.
