CYCLOSERINE: It (D-a-amino-3-isoxazolidone) is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is produced from cultures of streptomycin orchidaceous and streptomycin garyphalus. It is mainly used as a second line drug for the treatment of tuberculosis.
Indications: Pulmonary or intrapulmonary tuberculosis.
Dosage: Cycloserine is administered in doses of 15-20 mg/day (500 mg twice daily). (Max. 1mg/day in two divided dose)
Contra Indication: Hypersensitivity, epilepsy, depression or psychosis renal failure, alcoholics.
Special Precautions CNS toxicity, folic acid deficiency, megaloblastic anemia & sideroblastic anemia.
Pediatrics: Safety not established.
Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
Lactation: Contraindicated.
Elderly: Use with caution.
Side-effect: Dizziness, headache, harmers, and nervousness psychotic sates, visual disturbances, seizures.
Drug interaction: Alcohol increases the risk of convulsions. Concurrent administration of ionized may increase the CNS side effects such as dizziness of drowsiness.
