CAPREOMYCIN: It is a second line antimycobacterial drug, and is a bactericidal agent which exhibits activity against human strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Indications: Second line drug for concomitant use with other appropriate anti-tubercular drugs when the first line drugs are ineffective.
Dosage: 1gm daily intramuscularly, followed by 1g I is. 2.3 times weekly.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity.
Special precautions: Audiometric, renal function, tests and liver function tests must be performed at regular intervals.
Pediatrics: Not recommended.
Pregnancy: Safety not established.
Lactation: Use with caution.
Side effects: Tinnitus, vertigo, leucopenia, hypokalemia, urinary, skin rash, fever, pain and indurations at injection site, abnormalities in liver functions.
Drug interaction: Co-administration of amino glycoside and other polypeptide antibiotics may increase risk of reparatory paralysis and renal dysfunction. Non depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent enhances neuromuscular blockade due to synergistic effect on monaural function.
