PIPERACILLIN: It is recently developed penicillin which has activity similar to carbenicillin or ticarillin against Pseudomonas and inhibits Klebsiella as well. They have been used for infections caused by these organisms as well as for mixed aerobic-anaerobic infections.
Indications: Systemic & local infections, preoperative prophylaxis, gynecological infections, U.T.I. neonatal & life-threatening pediatric infections. Burns, septicemia.
Dosage: To be given ivy. Or I’m. 6-8 gm/day. Serious & complicated infections 12-18 gm/day.
Contra Indications: Hypersensitivity to penicillin or Cephalosporin’s.
Special Precautions: in pregnancy only when essential. Neuromuscular excitability or convulsion may occur.
Pediatrics: Safety in children below 12 yrs not established and in neonates not known.
Pregnancy: Not risk.
Lactation: Use with caution.
Elderly: Safe.
Side effects: High dose may cause bleeding by interfering with platelet function.
Drug Interactions: Inactivate aminoglycosed, synergistic with cephalosporins, piperacillin reduced by probenecid.
