Fluoxetine HCL
Its antidepressant action seems to be due to it’s capability to inhibit CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin.
It is a potent anti depressant, not sedative.
Indications: it is used for the treatment of mild to moderate endogenous depression. It may be of use in treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, obesity and alcoholism.
Contradictions: Severe renal failure, hypersensitivity, nursing mothers.
Safety Profile: In pregnancy and lactation, Patients with epilepsy and mania, patients with hepatic, cardiac and renal diseases, operating machinery, driving.
Adverse Effects: Anorexia, diarrhea, nervousness, headache and insomnia quite common. May precipitate mania and hypomania. Urticaria and skin rashes, fatigue, tremors and sweating.
Drug Interactions: Tricyclic anti depressants; Reduces the breakdown of tricyclic anti depressants. Change in the lithium levels.
Dosage: Adults: Initially 20mg a day. Increase at 20mg/day upto maximum 80mg/ day in 2 divided doses.
