Mirtazapine
Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic antidepressants. It is a potent antagonist of 5-HT receptors.
Indications: Depression.
Contradictions: Known hypersensitive to mirtazapine.
Safety Profile: Driving or operating machinery to the patient is not advisable. Agranulocytosis, Interfere with motor performance.
Adverse Effects : Peripheral oedema, somnolence, flu like syndrome, abnormal dreams and thinking, pharyngitis, photosensitivity reactions weight gain, constipation, urinary tract infections, dysuria, breast engorgement, gum haemorrhage, urethritis.
Drug Interactions: Administration with alcohol produced additive effect on impairment of cognitive and motor skills. Concomitant administration of mirtazapine with diazepam is to be avoided. Drugs that are metabolized by and/or inhibit cytochrome P 450 enzymes mirtazapine is not a potent inhibitor of various chtochrome P 450 enzymes.
Dosage: Initial dose 15mg/day, administered as a single dose, preferably in the evening prior to sleep. The effective dose range is 15-45mg/day. The pharmacological treatment of acute episodes of depression should continue for upto 6 months or longer.
