Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used topically alone or
in combination with tretinoin for the treatment of inflammatory
acne.
INDICATIONS: Papular inflammatory acne.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known hypersensitivity to
erythromycin or its components, concomitant use with pimozide,
terfenadine, astemizole or cisapride.
SAFETY PROFILE: Use with caution in patients
with impaired renal or hepatic functions, G-6-PD deficiency. Do
not contact with mucosal lining.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Dryness, pruritus, erythema,
desquamation, burning.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Erythromycin decreases clearance
of carbamazepine, cyclospore and triazolam. Decreases metabolism
of terfenadine, cisapride, astemizole.
DOSAGE: Apply to affected area twice daily for
5-8 weeks.
