THYROXINE SODIUM: Due to failure of thyroid development extreme iodine dificiency or a defect in hormone synthesis symptoms of cretinism are detected during infancy or childhood. Treatment opment and futher metnal retardation is prevented. Due to deficient production of thyroid hormone leads to excess TSH leading to thyroid eniargement, more efficient traping of iodide occurs & probably grater proportion of T3 is synthesiaed rsulthing in enough hormone production to meet peripheral damands. Thus treatment with thyroxine is replacement thrapy in this conditiion also, despite no overt hypothyroidism.
Indication : Certinis, adult hypothyoidism myxoedema coma, nontoxic goiter. Papilary carcinoma of thyroid.
Dosage : Intially 50-100 mcg dail, before break fast and adusted at 3-4 wks intervals by 50 mcg until normla metavolism is steadily maintined tis may require doses of 150-300 mcg daily over 50 yrs :
Contra Indications : Thyrotoxicosis, thpersensitivity
Drug Interaction : Enhances effect of oral anticoagulants. Aspirin and phenytoin enhance efftct of thyroxine. Chloestyramine reduces absorption. Aamiodarone elevates thyroxine levesl.
