LODINE: Though iodine is a constituent of thyoid hormone it is the fastes acting thyroid inbitor. It is reduced in the intestines to iodide and the response to iodine or iodides is ideticla. The gland if englarged shrinks, becomes firm and less vasuclar. The thyroid status returing ot nmal at a rate commensurate with complete stoppage of hormone release form the gland. The gland itself involutes and colloid is restored. With daily administration, peak effects are seen in 10-15 days. ater which ‘thyroid escape’ pccurs and thyrotoxicosis may retun with grater ventence, important action is inhibition of hormone release-’thyroid constipation.
Indications : Preperative preparation for thyroidectomy prophylaxis of endemic goliter. Hypothroidism hyperthyrodism
Contra Indication : Pregnacny, laction
Special Precautions : Lomg term use of high doses can cause hypothrodism and goiter. May causeflaring of acne in adolescents.
Side effects : Swelling in lips, eye lids, angioderma of larynx, fever, joint pain, petechial haemorrhages, thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy inflammation of mucous membranes, salivation sneezing with ithium. Alkalies and proteins reduce disinfectanit property.
