Flutamide
flutamide is a hormonal therapy. It is given in the treatment of prostate cancer. There are several types of hormonal therapies. The most suitable one is administered by the doctor. Hormonal therapies interfere with a type of hormones in a human body. Hormones are produced naturally in a human. The hormones work as messengers and help to control the activities in a body.
Most of the prostate cancers require supplies of the male hormone testosterone to grow. Flutamide has a structure which is identical with testosterone. flutamide functions by preventing testosterone from attaching itself to the receptors on the prostate cancer cells. Consequently, the cancer cells in a body grow more slowly or stop growing without testosterone
Technical detail:
It is a 5X- reductase inhibitor and inhibits
the conversion of testosterone to its more active product dihydrotestosterone.
INDICATIONS: BHP, advanced prostatic carcinoma.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: The drug is contraindicated
in those with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug. Those
with a history of chronic depression.
SAFETY-PROFILE: Fluid retention can occour in
patients with cardiac disease, monitoring of liver function tests
should be done periodically.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
stomatis, peeling of mucosa. Gynaecomastia, breast, tenerness,
galactorrhoea, insomnia, CNS disturbances.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Warfarin, increases prothrombin
time.
DOSAGE: 250 mg three times daily.
USES :
Treats prostate cancer when used with leuteinizing hormone-releasing
hormone (LHRH).

According to doctor's instructions.
IF YOU FORGET A DOSE ?
Take as soon as you remember up to 2 hours late. If more than
2 hours, wait for next scheduled dose (don't double this dose).
WHAT DRUG DOES ?
Interferes with utilization of androgen (testosterone) by body
cells.
TIME LAPSE BEFORE DRUG WORKS 2 hours.

DON'T TAKE IF You can't tolerate flutamide.

have liver disease.

SKIN & SUNLIGHT
May cause rash or intensify sunburn in areas exposed to sun or
ultraviolet light (photosensitivity reaction). Avoid overexposure.
Notify doctor if reaction occurs.
INFANTS & CHILDREN
Not intended for use in infants and children.
