NATEGLINIDE: Nateglinide, which is a derivative of D-phenylaanine, is a non-sulfonylurea insulin sevretagogue. It belongs to the meglitinide class of roal hypoglycemic agents. It causes insulin secretion via inhibition of the ATP-sensitive postassium channels in the panceratic beta cells.

Indications: Management of type-2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetest that cannot be controlled with diet and exercise, as a single agent or in combination for hypoglycemia not completely controlled with metformin.

Dosage: Nateglinide should be taken one hr to 30 minutes prior to meal. The recommended starting and maintenance dose is 120mg, three times a day before meals.

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity, Diabetic ketoacidosus with Type 1 diabetes

Special Precautions : Hypoglycemia : Geratric patients, malnourished patients, and those with adrenal or pituitary insufficiency are more susceptible to the glucose lowering effect of these treatments. The risk of hypoglycemia may be increased by strenous physical exercise, ingestion of alcohol, insuffcient caloric intake on an acute or chronic basis, or combinations with other oral antidiabetic agents. Hepatic impairment, loss of glyceamic control. Pregnancy and loctations.

Side-effects: Dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, hypoglycemia, back pain, arthropathy, upper repiartory tract infection, bronchitis, coughing, flu like symptoms, accidetal injuries.
