ROSIGLITAZONE: It belongs to the thiazolidinediones group which improve insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Indication: Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus as monotherapy of combination therapy.
Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions: Should be avoided in patients with liver dysfunction or a history of alcohol abuse. Not recommended for the treatment of type 1diabetes or for the treatment of diabetics kitoacidosis. Since it may result in resumption of ovulatory in premenopausal anovulatory women with insulin resistance these patients may be risk for pregnancy.
Dosage: Adults: Initially 4mg administered either as a single dose or in two divided doses. The dose may be increased to 8 mg once daily or two divided class.
Side-effects: Increase of total cholesterol, weight gain, oedema, lowering of heamoglobin.
Drug Interactions: Metformin, acarbose.
