Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease is caused by a bacteria. It’s a serious disease that generally attacks children under the age of 5 years.

A child gets Hib disease from other persons who have the bacteria but not aware of this. Haemophilus influenzae type b spreads from one person to another.

If the germ of Haemophilus influenzae type b live in a child's throat, nose, the child may not get sick. But when the germs of Haemophilus influenzae type b reaches the lungs or the bloodstream, it can pasue as a major threat.

Hib disease can also cause:

  • severe swelling in the throat
  • pneumonia
  • infections of joints, bones, blood and covering of the heart

Technical detail:

Haemophilus influenzae vaccine is used for active immunization against Haemophilus influence type B infections, which are one of the major causes of meningitis and other severe systemic infections in young children. It is prepared from the highly purified capsular polysaccharide antigen of Homophiles influenza type b covalently conjugated with purified Tetanus toxoid protein. It is available in freeze dried form and therefore is highly stable. It induces strong immune response is 95-100% vaccinees with least reactogenicity.

Side Effects: Mild and transient, local erythema, swelling, fever, irritability, sleepiness, Get disturbances, rashes & anorexia.

Contraindications : Hypersensitivity to constituents ot the vaccine, including to diptheria toxoid.

Special precautions: Epinephrine (1:1000) should be available; caution should be exercised in patients with coagulation disorders, acute febrile illnesses and immunosuppressed patients where the vaccine may not be effective.

Indications: Immunization of children from 2-71 months of age against invasive diseases caused by Homophiles influenza type b (meningitis, septicemia cellulites, arthritis, epiglottis.

Dosage and Administration: The Vaccine can be given concurrently with other pediatric vaccines like OPV, MMR etc. but at different sites. Recommended schedule of dosage is given in tabular form.
